BMC objects to conservancy staff's '˜juta'campaign

The conservancy staff brought shoes and chappals they had collected, to the BMC headquarters on Thursday.

The BMC conservancy staff’s Jute do warna humse jute le lo propaganda against Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) additional municipal commissioner R A Rajeev for denying them basic facilities like shoes, has now landed them in big trouble. The BMC has strongly reacted to the Kachra Vahatuk Shramik Sangh’s remarks and has approached the Azad maidan police station complaining against the senior members of the Sangh.

According to the BMC, on August 12, the Sangh had put up some posters in the vicinity of the civic body’s headquarters demanding shoes for conservancy workers on contract. The posters carried derogatory remarks against IAS officer Rajiv, stating ‘either you allot us shoes or you will be thrashed with shoes.’  The Sangh alleged that nearly 30 conservancy workers succumb to death due to various diseases every year. The deaths increase every year as the workers have not been provided even the basic safety facilities.

On Thursday, many conservancy workers gathered at the BMC head office to hand over shoes and chappals they had collected from across the city. The BMC security and police did not allow them to enter inside the building. So a delegation of workers had a meeting with municipal commissioner Jairaj Phatak to discuss their problems.

Through the posters, the workers complained that their repeated requests for shoes have not been heeded to. They have brought the matter to the notice of their contractor and even BMC officials, but their efforts were in vain.

Milind Ranade, conservancy staff union leader said civic chief Phatak has agreed to their demands. With the agitation, Phatak has ensured within a week, safety gear such as shoes and hand-gloves will be given to the conservancy staff. Beside this, the workers’ salary which was being given in cash, will henceforth be given by cheque with even this year’s diwali bonus being given by cheque.

“I have heard that the BMC officials have registered a police complaint against me. But, I do not care about it as long as I am fighting for the staff,” Ranade added.
